Someone Like Her by Awais Khan
“Never been to Roller Coaster? No worries, I got you covered!
Let’s talk about “Someone Like Her” by Awais Khan, which is no less than a roller coaster ride.
You guys have seen my stories; how this story left me sleepless, turning pages all night.
So the story is about a brave, high-spirited Multani girl who worked for an NGO specifically for women who are victims of domestic violence.
Life took an upside-down turn and left her only misery and pain for life. But she, on the other side, is not ready to accept fate and fought hard for her damaged existence.
The character of Ayesha, her mindset, habits, lifestyles show how Multan is evolving. How time changes everything. A conservative city silently transforming.
The symbolism of a deer as a poor animal by Raza Masood shows how the role of a predator is destined. It’s written who will sacrifice life for one’s happiness.
The story is beautifully fabricated, and I loved how Awais Khan brought light to the social issues that are mostly brushed under the carpet.
We will encounter feudalism in the character of Raza Masood and his family. How the feudal lords are dealing with women they want or even the people inferior to them. The concept of “If you want it, get it” is a fine example in his case.
The whole story, characters, locations, it’s all so relatable.
Awais is breaking stereotypes by sending Pakistani men to therapy groups. (I loved that part)
Also, how he is trying to normalize dealing with everyone in the same way, even if they have insecurities written on their faces. We should be more empathetic towards people. We don’t know about their battles.
The character of Kamil is uff my God 🫣 so nice. I can write a separate post about him. How wonderful he is. And yet again, wonderful people who seem normal can still have severe depression.
One thing I like the most about this story is, everyone has their fair share of mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes, even if it’s us, our parents, or our loved ones. They are humans. They are designed this way.
And let me tell you a thing, every reader imagined a character while reading it. So when I was reading DSP Amna Habib, ASP Shehrbano came to my mind, and it was so fun imagining her winning the case.
One thing that I enjoyed reading is when Awais Khan mentioned Gloria Jeans Multan in the story. It was a win win for me.
My jaw dropped because the millennials of Multan would definitely agree, this used to be our favorite spot.
Being Multani, I enjoyed Saraiki. How the Saraiki phrases like کوئی ایں چھوئر کوں سمجھاوے make it even more wonderful. I felt great reading my language.
There is so much I want to write. Ayesha, Kamil, Saqib, Raza Masood, Sadar Sab, Jameela Aunty, Neelam Khala, Safiya, Rabiya, Chandni, and Urroj. All of them exist. They all exist around us. Awais Khan took the mirror to show us what our society is like and what people around us are dealing with.
“Someone like her” may be fiction, but nobody can deny it’s not true. The story is heart-wrenching and so terrifying. Ayesha and her story are unforgettable.
I would definitely recommend reading this book.
